Do you remember when you were younger, trying to get in a nightclub ?

Common, it hasn’t been that long !

You wanted to know how to dress, what to say, anything to get you past the front door.

In this video, I’ll show you the moving to Paris checklist you need to get past a lot of front doors on your way to this beautiful city.

As a former expat myself, I’ve had more than my share of French bureaucracy. So, to make it a little bit easier for you, I made a list of the 5 types of documents you need to gather for your move to Paris. Follow me !

Why you need this moving to Paris checklist

Before we dive in, I wanted to share something with you. I’ve been in Paris for a long time now and I should really have known better, but this is what happened to me last week. It was Monday and it was workout day for me. I love it because it’s one of these rare moments I get all to myself. The view is great on the Seine River and on the city pool.

Well, everything was going great until it turned short. I didn’t understand at first, but then I got it. I was banned from the gym because of a piece of paper. I had forgotten to update my medical certificate and that was no way around that.

So, if you don’t want doors to slam in your face and relocate to Paris with grace, stick with me !

The checklist to move to Paris : 5 types of documents

  • Documents on your personal status

This means passports -check if they are valid and every member of the family has one. You also need birth certificates, marriage certificate, divorce papers, anything on your family history. Don’t forget, all these papers need to be in French or translated by a certified translator.

See the link here for the list of certified translator in France, but you can also go to the French Embassy or consulate in your country.

  • Document showing why you’re coming to France and where you’re coming from

You’re coming to Paris to study or to work. You need to provide your visa or your “carte de séjour”. Make sure all members of the family have one. In addition, you have to prove paperwork stating where you are moving from. Where did you live before? Provide anything to prove it.

  • Your driver’s license

Having a car in Paris is not absolutely necessary, but if you live in the suburbs, it can be useful. If you can’t make up your mind yet on whether to live in the suburbs or in Paris, check out this blog post on the pros and cons. Getting back to the driver’s license, for some countries, you can exchange your driver’s license into a French driver’s license, so check if you’re eligible or not.

  •  Health documents

You can’t move to Paris without medical records. The medical history of all members of the family, including your pets is really relevant. I also recommend that you stock up on any medical treatment you’re on until you get the social security running in Paris.

  • Documents giving proof of resources and proof of activity

So, you want to have access to any kind of resources you have now and you will have in Paris. For your professional activity, whether you’re working or studying in Paris, you need to prove when you are starting, what you’re doing and for how long.

Your turn !

So, now you know what it takes to open these doors with this moving to Paris checklist. Compile all paperwork into a file and keep it safe with you.
